CHAPTER 1 - The Adventure Begins...
We moved to our new location in September of '96 and were sure of just where we were going to put the pastures and the new barn for our alpacas. Then we went through just about the wettest winter on record for our area and discovered that there was a problem with our proposed pasture. What's the name of that movie - "A River Runs Through It" ? Not good.
That was when we started re-evaluating our decision to bull-doze the old barn:
Just needs a little TLC, right?
RIGHT! Nothing a good structural engineer couldn't fix... walls back on the foundation, shear panels to keep it from falling over (any more), trusses to keep the roof from collapsing (any more), new roof, dry rot repair, doors that close, new loafing shed and a couple of coats of paint!
Piece of cake!
The Adventure Continues...
Over the last few months we have been making slow, but steady, progress. The barn is now standing fairly straight and almost square. We have doors on (that close), a roof that doesn't leak, the new loafing area and a coat of primer on the front. Just for perspective, here is a picture of our "in progress" barn:
Our alpacas came home on Memorial Day weekend '97 and are quite a distraction to getting any work done on or around the barn. It is a joy to just sit and watch these special animals!
We have lots of little helpers who are anxious to paint the barn red. That should be an experience worth sharing! (And we will!)
